The IRPT’s Statement on Ongoing Pressures on HDIM 2016’s Participant
Following Europe’s largest annual human rights conference which was organized by the OSCE ODIHR in September 2016, various kinds of punishments and oppressions on relatives of the HDIM 2016’s Tajik participants, especially the IRPT activist Ilhomjon Yoqubov have been intensified by Tajik authorities at home.
After his active participation in the HDIM (2016) in Warsaw, all members of his family, including his mother and sister, were subjected to harsh interrogations, psychological pressures, threats of property confiscation as well as protests outside their houses in Khujand city was held. The health of his 70-years old mother, who suffers from shortness of breath, due to the said pressures and protesters outside her house, was severely deteriorated.
The security officials’ oppressions and pressures were dramatically intensified to the extent that more than 15 persons of his family members had no choice other than to leave Tajikistan for other countries. The government has planned to confiscate their houses.
It is worthy to note that according to his neighbors, 6 persons with civil clothes (security officials) have descended on Ochakhon Yokubova, his mother’s house (locates in Chashma — 3 Region, Kvartal 40, House 13, Khujand city) and the house was video-recorded and then sealed by them.
In the same day, a group of persons with civil clothes (security officials) have gone to his sister’s house (locates in Chashma-3 Region, Shermatov Street) and sealed it. In 13 October 2016, they have descended on the flat (Flat 72, Apartment 1, Region 34, Khujand City) where he had lived until his migration to Europe and registered in the name of his mother, and robbed the value properties and it was also sealed by them.
So, We call on international community, international organizations and friend countries to urge the Tajik government:
1. To stop all kind of its unlawful actions like oppression and confiscation of the activists’ properties due to participation and criticizing the government in an international conference;
2. To make an end to using the family members and relatives as hostages to silence the dissent.
